ANXIETY IN THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE FILM BOYKA: UNDISPUTED IV
Abstract
Anxiety is one of the most common psychological issues represented in literary works because it influences human thoughts, emotions, and behavior. This study aimed to analyze how anxiety was depicted and how defense mechanisms were portrayed in the main character of Boyka: Undisputed IV. The study employed a qualitative research design using film analysis. The data consisted of dialogues, scenes, and character actions that reflected psychological conflict and were analyzed using Sigmund Freud's theory of anxiety and Anna Freud's theory of defense mechanisms. The results showed that the main character experienced three types of anxiety: realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety, with moral anxiety emerging as the dominant form due to feelings of guilt and moral responsibility. The analysis also revealed five defense mechanisms employed by the main character, namely regression, reaction formation, undoing, introjection, and turning against the self, as unconscious strategies to cope with emotional conflict. It was concluded that anxiety and defense mechanisms were closely interconnected, as the psychological pressure experienced by the main character unconsciously triggered various defense mechanisms throughout the film. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the representation of psychological conflict in film through a psychoanalytic perspective.
