KAJIAN ETNOGRAFI PADA ARSITEKTUR RUMAH ADAT JAMBI (STUDI KASUS: PERMUKIMAN JALAN PADANG LAMO, SUNGAI ABANG)
Abstract
Ethnography in architecture is a crucial element in exploring the cultural meanings and philosophies embedded within traditional architecture. This study focuses on understanding the relationship between architectural elements and local cultural values. The research aims to examine and uncover the cultural meanings and architectural philosophies of settlements along Padang Lamo Road, Sungai Abang, one of the oldest road corridors in Tebo Regency, Jambi. The settlement corridor along Padang Lamo Road, Sungai Abang still retains several traditional houses that persist amidst the development of modern residential areas. The research method employed in this study is descriptive qualitative, utilizing data collection techniques such as participatory observation, in-depth interviews with house occupants, and documentation. The findings indicate that despite renovations or changes in certain parts or elements of traditional houses, the overall structure, ornaments, and spatial arrangement of the traditional houses still reflect the cosmological concepts of Jambi society, rooted in customary beliefs, religion, and social systems. This study is expected to contribute to the importance of preserving traditional architecture and developing urban area planning based on local wisdom.
