Official Manuscript Templates

Prepare your manuscript using the JICE template appropriate to the submission language. The review copy must be anonymized even if the downloaded template contains author-identifying placeholders.

A. General Author Guidelines

The requirements in this section apply to every manuscript submitted to JICE.

01

Language and Originality

Manuscripts must be written in Indonesian or English and present original scholarly work. Submitted manuscripts must not have been published previously or be under consideration by another journal. Authors must comply with JICE’s publication ethics, originality, and plagiarism policies and disclose relevant prior dissemination when required by the editorial office.

02

Manuscript Types

JICE considers three primary manuscript categories: Original Research Articles, Case Study Articles, and Literature Review Articles. All submissions must demonstrate a clear contribution to civil engineering or infrastructure-related knowledge or practice, and align with the journal’s Focus and Scope. Detailed category descriptions are provided in the Manuscript Types policy.

03

Registration and Online Submission

Manuscripts must be submitted through the JICE online submission system. Authors should register for an account or log in and use the New Submission function. If prompted to select a role, authors must ensure that their account has author/submission privileges. A step-by-step submission guide is provided in Section D below.

04

Editorial Screening and Peer Review

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening for relevance, completeness, scholarly quality, and methodological soundness. Suitable manuscripts proceed to peer review. Since February 2026, JICE has implemented double-blind peer review, in which authors’ and reviewers’ identities are concealed from one another. The editor considers reviewers’ reports and authors’ revisions when making the final editorial decision. See the Peer Review Process.

05

Manuscript Length

The manuscript must contain 8–15 pages, including the reference list, tables, and figures. Authors should use the official template and present information concisely without omitting material necessary to understand or evaluate the study.

06

Manuscript Template and File Preparation

Authors must prepare the manuscript using the official JICE template and comply with its prescribed layout and formatting. English and Indonesian template downloads are provided at the beginning of this page and in the journal sidebar. Manuscript files should be submitted in an editable format accepted by the submission system.

If the template contains placeholders for author names, affiliations, or acknowledgments, remove these from the manuscript intended for review. The information will be restored during preparation of the accepted manuscript.

07

Authorship, Contributions, and Research Integrity

All listed authors must meet JICE’s authorship criteria, approve the manuscript, and accept responsibility for the integrity of the work. The corresponding author must confirm co-author agreement, accurate author metadata, and a complete Author Contributions statement. Non-author contributors should be acknowledged appropriately. Requests to alter authorship after submission require justification and the relevant written agreements. Consult the Authorship and Contributorship Policy.

Authors must declare relevant funding, competing interests, and the use of AI-assisted tools when applicable. AI tools must not be listed as authors; human authors remain responsible for submitted content.

08

Anonymization for Double-Blind Review

The file supplied for peer review must not disclose author names, affiliations, email addresses, author-identifying acknowledgments, or other direct identifiers. Remove identifying details from document properties, tracked changes, comments, headers, footers, and file names. Check supporting files and embedded figure metadata where relevant.

Authors should enter complete author information in OJS submission metadata. If requested, a separate title page, Author Contributions statement, funding declaration, or other identifying material should be provided to the editorial office without inclusion in files shared with reviewers. Relevant self-citations may be retained but should be presented in the third person and must not directly reveal authorship.

Important: Before final submission, open the anonymized file and inspect it as a reviewer would. A separate administrative file is not automatically anonymous; the editorial team must ensure that only appropriate files are assigned to reviewers.

B. Manuscript Structure

Authors should follow the manuscript template while adapting the technical details and organization to the chosen article type where appropriate.

01

Title

The title must be concise, informative, and accurately reflect the principal topic or contribution of the study. It must contain no more than 14 words. Avoid unnecessary wording and uncommon abbreviations.

02

Author Names and Affiliations

Provide each author’s full name, institutional affiliation, institutional address, and email address through OJS. Do not include academic degrees or professional titles. This information must not appear in the anonymized manuscript file. A separate title page may be supplied to the editorial office if requested; author details are included in the final publication following acceptance.

03

Abstract and Keywords

An English abstract is mandatory for every submission. Manuscripts written in Indonesian must include both an English abstract and an Indonesian abstract. Each required abstract must be a single paragraph of 200–300 words, describing the context or problem, objective, approach or methods, principal results, and conclusions, as appropriate to the manuscript type.

Provide 3–5 keywords or key phrases that accurately represent the research topic and support indexing and discovery. Avoid repeating overly general terms.

04

Introduction

The Introduction should establish the engineering or infrastructure problem, provide sufficient background, critically engage with relevant prior studies, and explain the state of the art. It should identify the research gap or practical problem, justify the study’s significance, and conclude with clearly stated research objectives or questions.

05

Research Methods

Describe the research design, data sources, materials, instruments, procedures, assumptions, and analytical methods in enough detail to permit informed evaluation and, where feasible, replication. Cite applicable technical standards and identify their editions or versions when relevant.

For experimental and field studies, report appropriate details of materials or specimens, site conditions, testing or monitoring procedures, sample size or measurement frequency, data quality, and analysis. For numerical or analytical investigations, explain the model, input parameters, governing assumptions, loading or boundary conditions, verification or validation, and relevant limitations.

For case studies, explain case selection, evidence sources, technical assessment criteria, and analytical approach. For literature reviews, describe the review question, search sources, selection criteria, and synthesis method as appropriate to the review design. Studies involving human participants should report ethics approval or consent procedures where applicable.

06

Results and Discussion

Present results clearly and systematically, supported by appropriately numbered tables, figures, equations, and quantitative or qualitative evidence. Explain how the findings address the research objectives or questions. Where relevant, report uncertainty, variability, and model or measurement limitations.

Discuss the implications of the findings in relation to applicable engineering principles, design or performance criteria, previous research, and the study’s contribution. Explain significant agreements or differences with earlier studies without merely repeating the reported results.

07

Conclusions

Conclusions must answer the research objectives, summarize the principal findings and their scientific or practical implications, and remain supported by the presented evidence. Avoid introducing new results or repeating the abstract. Important limitations and recommendations for future research or engineering application may be included where appropriate.

08

Author Contributions

An Author Contributions statement is required. Authors are encouraged to use applicable Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) categories, such as Conceptualization, Methodology, Investigation, Formal analysis, Data curation, Validation, Software, Writing – original draft, Writing – review and editing, and Supervision. Each author must approve the statement.

During double-blind review, identifying contribution details must be provided to the editorial office separately and excluded from the anonymized file. The approved contribution statement must be included in the final accepted manuscript. CRediT roles describe contributions but do not by themselves determine authorship eligibility.

09

References and IEEE Style

Include only sources cited in the manuscript and format all in-text citations and reference entries according to IEEE style. In-text citations use numbered square brackets, such as [1] and [2], and the reference list is arranged in citation order. Provide complete bibliographic details and DOI or stable URL when available.

Authors should ensure that at least 80% of references comprise journal articles, conference proceedings, or other research publications published within the previous five years. Foundational research and applicable engineering codes, standards, and authoritative technical references may also be cited where relevant. Reference-management software such as Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote is recommended; authors remain responsible for checking each citation.

The 80% recency expectation is a JICE editorial guideline, not a requirement imposed by the IEEE referencing style. See the IEEE Editorial Style Manual for reference-format guidance.

C. Civil Engineering Reporting Considerations

In addition to the required manuscript sections, authors should consider the following reporting practices when applicable to their research design and engineering topic.

Engineering evidence and technical standards

Describe the units, specifications, design codes, testing standards, or analytical assumptions relevant to the investigation. Examples may include SNI, ASTM, AASHTO, ISO, or other applicable references; cite the specific edition used rather than assuming any single code applies to all studies.

Figures, tables, equations, and units

Number and refer to all visual materials in the text. Use readable labels and appropriate units; apply SI units wherever suitable. Explain symbols and abbreviations on first use. Obtain permission for any third-party material when necessary.

Research ethics and declarations

Disclose funding, competing interests, significant assistance, and AI-tool use where applicable. Report ethics approval and participant consent when required for interviews, questionnaires, or other research involving people. Keep identifying declarations out of reviewer-facing files.

Data reliability and research transparency

Present measurement methods, calibration or quality-control procedures, model validation, and uncertainty or limitations where applicable. Supporting datasets and calculations may be supplied if requested by the editor, subject to confidentiality and applicable restrictions.
