CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-AB VEHICLES ENTERING THE CITY OF YOGYAKARTA BY VEHICLE TYPE, ORIGIN AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION

Abstrak

Yogyakarta City, one of Indonesia's major tourism destinations, experiences significant traffic pressure from vehicles registered outside the local AB license plate region. This study analyzes the volume, composition, regional origin, temporal distribution, and traffic impacts of non-local vehicles entering the city. Traffic surveys were conducted over three consecutive days (15–17 May 2026) at the four main entrance corridors using the Manual Classified Count (MCC) method. Five vehicle categories were observed, while locally registered AB vehicles were excluded. A total of 16,447 non-local vehicles were recorded. Minibuses (57.4%) and sedans (31.7%) dominated the traffic, indicating tourism travel by families and small groups. Vehicles with plate B accounted for the largest proportion (24.0%), followed by AA (19.8%), H (11.4%), and AD (10.4%), with Central Java contributing approximately 52% of the total traffic. Peak traffic occurred during 08:00–12:00 and 14:00–17:00, reducing the estimated Level of Service (LOS) to D–E. The study recommends adaptive traffic management, park-and-ride facilities, restrictions on large buses in the city center, and Variable Message Signs (VMS).
